Happy Chinese New Years everyone! Okay, so it was yesterday, but I spent too long working on this picture and I didn’t want to post this without it being finished. I haven’t drawn anything for a while, so I’m still a bit rusty. It’s the year of the tiger, so I had to do something tiger related. Although she seems more like a cat girl with tiger strips than a tiger girl. This was just a warm up as I’ll be doing a piece for a contest in a forum I frequent. Look forward to seeing it when I’m done!
So Chinese New Years in general was pretty uneventful. I don’t have any family here in Los Angeles, so I just made calls to my parents in the Bay Area and my cousin’s family in New York. Unlike most Chinese families, we don’t have a habit of giving out red pouches. In case you don’t know what they are, red pouches are small red envelopes that Chinese people give out to the sons and daughters of family and friends during Chinese New Years. They usually contain some amount of money, and depending on how loaded the giver is, you could expect to receive upwards of a couple hundred dollars. Of course, since my family doesn’t do this, and most of my extended family is in China, I don’t remember the last time I received a red pouch.
In terms of school, so far I seem to be on top of things. I’ll be presenting graphics papers in the next two weeks, as well as working on my term projects for my two graphics classes. I have a pretty good idea of what I’m going to do, so as long as everything goes well, I’ll be back on track with my Ph.D. I’ve also updated and cleaned up my resume, and I have a decent, albeit short, cover letter too. I’ll be applying to a few summer internships in the next week or so, and hopefully I’ll get a few interviews. I’ve bought a programming interviews book to help me prepare for them, since the last time I interviewed was for undergraduate schools. I didn’t have to interview at all for grad school, so I’m completely inexperienced in that area. Although for an internship, I don’t think I have to be that amazing to get in, except for Google of course. Still, it’ll be a good learning experience for when I do have to finally get a job for myself.
